Organising Christmas Decorations

A Stress-Free Festive Season

The festive season is fast approaching, and it’s the perfect time to plan ahead and make your Christmas decorating experience enjoyable and more organised. This year, break free from the annual tangle of lights and heaps of ornaments and embrace a clutter-free, systematic approach to storing displaying and organising Christmas decorations. Here are some helpful tips for a more organised and joyful Christmas.

Start Early:

One of the keys to a stress-free Christmas is to get your decorations out early. Don’t wait until the last minute when you’re already swamped with holiday preparations. Set aside a day in November, or even earlier, to retrieve your decorations from storage. This way, you’ll have ample time to sort and declutter, then you are ready to arrange everything beautifully when the time comes. In our house, we don’t put anything up until December!

Declutter Before Adding More:

It’s incredibly tempting to be drawn to shiny, brand-new decorations, yet it’s easy to forget what treasures you already possess, especially when they’ve been tucked away for a whole year. First, evaluate your existing decorations. If there are decorations that never make it out of their boxes year-on-year, it’s time to let them go. There’s no need to store things you no longer use or love, and the decluttering phase helps you assess whether you truly need any additional items. Next, it’s a good idea to test all your lights. Instead of spending time untangling them right away, make sure they actually work first! You now know whether you require any additional items!

Embrace Fresh Greenery:

My top tip for decorating without having to worry about cost and storage space is to bring the beauty of the outdoors inside. Consider gathering fresh greenery from your garden, such as sprigs from evergreen bushes or trees. These natural elements not only add a touch of elegance to your decor, but they’re also completely free. The best part is, you don’t need to find space to store them for the rest of the year. Place a few sprigs in a vase on your dining table, drape them around a mirror or fireplace, or use them to create a welcoming centrepiece. Fresh greenery infuses your home with a festive, organic touch, and it’s a sustainable, cost-effective way to enhance your holiday decor.

Organised Storage / Organising Christmas Decorations:

Once your decorations are up, get those large boxes away and out of sight. Storing Christmas decorations in an organised manner can make a world of difference. I recommend using clear, plastic boxes for storing your ornaments. They allow you to see what’s inside and protect your decorations from dust and damage. Consider using dedicated boxes or containers for specific types of decorations, such as baubles, lights, and ornaments. And if you have bought new decorations, keep the packaging! You never know what fragile delights you need to protect until next year. To make future Christmases even smoother, label your storage boxes before they head back to the loft or garage. Pop the boxes inside each other and return to your storage area, until Christmas is over. Perhaps a label maker should be on your Christmas list?

A Christmas Wrapping Paper Box:

One area often overlooked is the organisation of Christmas wrapping paper. We need access to these throughout the festive period, yet storing rolls of gift wrap can be a hassle, but it doesn’t have to be. Invest in a dedicated Christmas wrapping paper box or container to keep your paper tidy, crease-free, and ready for wrapping. This not only saves you time but also adds a touch of convenience to your gift-wrapping routine. Perhaps leave scissors and tape in there too!

This Christmas, bring joy back into the process of decorating your home by staying organised. Starting early, decluttering, and storing your Christmas decorations thoughtfully will not only make your life easier but also enhance the festive spirit. Remember, there’s no need to keep items you no longer love. Make space for the things that truly bring you joy and happiness during this special season.

By following these simple tips, you’ll find yourself enjoying a beautifully organised and stress-free Christmas, with more time to focus on what truly matters – spending quality moments with your loved ones.
