The September Reset: Decluttering and Organising for a Calm Home

September has arrived, and with it comes the close of the summer holidays. The long, lazy mornings, endless snack times, later bedtimes, and days filled with children’s activities have been wonderful, but let’s be honest, they’ve also left many of our homes in a state of chaos. Toys are scattered, wardrobes are overflowing, and kitchen counters seem to have disappeared under the mess of daily family life. Time to start decluttering and organising!

As a Professional Home Organiser in Saffron Walden, Bishop’s Stortford, Cambridge and across Essex, I always notice that September is one of the busiest times of year for families seeking support. Why? Because September feels like a natural moment for change. Just as spring is linked with cleaning, September gives us the perfect opportunity to reset, reorganise and regain control of our homes and, in turn, our minds.

For me, September is like a second New Year. The new academic year brings with it a fresh start, new routines, and a renewed motivation to get organised. It’s a time to put the chaos of summer behind us and create homes that feel calm, functional and freeing.

Why September is the Perfect Time to Reset

During the summer, routines tend to slip. Bedtimes get later, meals become more relaxed, and family life is less structured. While this makes for wonderful memories, it can also mean our homes take a back seat. By the end of August, many families tell me their houses feel heavy, cluttered and overwhelming.

Clutter doesn’t just create mess, it creates mental noise. It makes it harder to focus, harder to feel clear headed, and harder to truly relax. When September rolls around and life demands more structure, this disorganisation can feel even more stressful.

That’s where a September reset comes in. It’s not just about cleaning up after summer; it’s about creating order in your home that supports your routines, makes everyday tasks easier, and leaves you with more time to enjoy family life.

How to Begin Your September Reset – Decluttering and Organising

When I visit homes in Saffron Walden, Bishop’s Stortford, Cambridge and Essex, I always encourage my clients to start with the spaces that impact daily life the most. Here are my top tips:

1. Reset the children’s wardrobes

Wardrobes are often a major source of chaos. Start by emptying everything out. Remove clothes that are too small, too worn or no longer loved. Pass them on to younger siblings, donate them to charity, or recycle what can’t be used. Then, make sure school uniforms are easy for children to reach themselves, so mornings run smoothly. Use baskets or dividers for smaller items like socks, underwear and PE kits.

2. Refresh the kitchen

The kitchen is the heart of the home, and after a summer of BBQs, picnics and constant snacking, it probably needs a good reset. Clean out the fridge, check dates in the cupboards, and clear your worktops. Creating order in the kitchen not only makes meal prep faster, it reduces stress for the whole family. September is also the perfect time to get back into meal planning. Creating a weekly meal plan and writing your shopping list from it not only saves time and stress during the week, but also prevents over-buying and keeps your kitchen free from unnecessary clutter

3. Tidy toys and play areas

Children’s play areas often take the biggest hit during the summer holidays. Start by decluttering toys that are no longer used, broken, or outgrown. With Christmas just a few months away, now is the perfect time to create space for new things. Group toys into categories, and store them in labelled baskets or boxes so they’re easy to find and just as easy to put away.

4. Organise paperwork

Back-to-school season brings with it an influx of paperwork: timetables, lunch menus, swimming days, and PE kits. To avoid daily stress, create a simple system. I recommend having two copies of essential information, one upstairs and one downstairs, so it’s always accessible. You might use folders, pin boards or cupboard doors as a central point of reference. This small step creates a huge sense of calm. In my own home, print outs live on the inside of the airing cupboard door, which is on the landing, and downstairs on the inside of the shoe cupboard door in the hall. Everyone in the house knows where to find the information they need for a smooth start to their day.

5. Build daily non-negotiables

A daily reset can transform how your home feels. My own routine is simple: in the mornings I open the windows, make the beds, and do a quick 10-minute tidy. In the evenings, I reset the kitchen, clear the counters and make sure bags and shoes are ready for the next day. These small habits stop mess from spiralling into chaos.

Why Work With a Professional Home Organiser?

Not everyone has the time, energy or headspace to tackle a September reset alone. That’s where I come in. As a Professional Home Organiser working in Saffron Walden, Bishop’s Stortford, Cambridge and across Essex, I help families transform their homes into calm, functional spaces that make daily life easier.

I understand how overwhelming it can feel to face mess and disorganisation. You may not know where to start, or feel too busy to dedicate the time. My role is to guide you through the process, help you make confident decisions, and create systems that work for your family long-term.

Whether it’s resetting a child’s wardrobe, reorganising a kitchen, or tackling a whole-home declutter, I bring structure, support and motivation to make the process smooth and stress-free.

The Benefits of a September Reset

A September reset doesn’t just transform your home, it transforms how you feel within it. My clients often say they feel lighter, more productive, and far less stressed after we work together. The benefits are clear:

  • Less stress: clutter increases stress, while organised spaces help you feel calm and clear-headed.
  • More productivity: whether working from home or supporting children with homework, a tidy environment makes it easier to focus.
  • Better routines: simple systems save time and make everyday life flow more smoothly.
  • A happier home: when your home feels ordered, family life feels calmer and more enjoyable.
