From Cluttered Storage to Walk-In Wardrobe: A Teenage Bedroom Transformation in Essex

Effective organisation and decluttering can completely transform underused areas of the home, bringing clarity, function and calm. In this project, I worked with a family in a beautiful period property to reclaim a cluttered store room off a 14-year-old boy’s bedroom. What had become an overwhelming dumping ground was thoughtfully decluttered, reorganised, and repurposed into a practical, well-ordered walk-in wardrobe—proving that even the most forgotten spaces can be turned into something useful and inspiring.

Case Study

Decluttering and Organising in Saffron Walden, Bishop’s Stortford, Cambridge and Beyond

Even the most beautiful homes have hidden spaces that become neglected and overwhelmed by clutter. In this recent LM HomeSort project, I worked with a local family in a period property to transform a chaotic store room—just off their 14-year-old son’s bedroom—into a calm, functional walk-in wardrobe.

Located in a top-floor bedroom tucked into the eaves, this store room had become a catch-all dumping ground. With three growing boys (aged 6, 14, and 16) sharing the home, it was important to hold onto clothing and essentials to pass down to younger siblings—but in a way that was accessible and organised.

step 1

Step One: Full Declutter and Sort

We began by completely emptying the space and sorting every item into clear, manageable categories to simplify decision-making.

step 2

Practical Storage Solutions

Remaining items were packed into clearly labelled boxes, organised by size and type, and moved to secure long-term storage.

step 3

Creating a Walk-In Wardrobe

With the space cleared, we transformed the room into a practical walk-in wardrobe by relocating and rearranging existing furniture.

The Challenge: A Forgotten Space Full of Clutter

Over time, this small room had lost all sense of purpose. It was cluttered, overwhelming, and no longer usable. What should have been a valuable extension of the bedroom had instead become a stressful space that added to the daily chaos.

Our goal was to reclaim it—not just by tidying, but by creating long-term, functional systems to support a busy family household.

Step One: Full Declutter and Sort

The process began by completely emptying the space, giving me the room to methodically work through each box. Together with the client, we sorted clothes and shoes by size, donated outgrown items, and set aside anything damaged for textile recycling.

Using a clear category-based approach, I laid everything out on the floor to create a visual, manageable layout. This clarity helped the client make confident decisions about what to keep, store, and let go.

Step Two: Practical Storage Solutions

Once sorted, we packed the remaining items into clearly labelled boxes—organised by size and category—and relocated them to a dry, secure storage area above the garage. This freed up the room for a complete transformation.

Step Three: Creating a Walk-In Wardrobe

With the space now clear, we were able to reimagine its purpose. I suggested relocating a chest of drawers from the main bedroom (where it was awkwardly placed) into the newly cleared store room. With help from the strong 16-year-old in the house, we moved two sets of drawers into the space—instantly turning it into a practical, accessible walk-in wardrobe.

The Result: A Calmer, More Organised Home

The difference was immediate. The teenage bedroom felt lighter, more spacious, and calmer—simply by relocating bulky furniture and giving the store room a clear, useful function. In the end, we donated three bags of clothes and one bag of books to charity, and responsibly recycled a fourth bag of worn-out items.

This project is a perfect example of how decluttering and organising—even in small or hidden areas—can have a huge impact on how a home functions and feels.
